I will respect this is a Microsoft forum and leave it at that, but I'm sure Bing. You have to use a 3rd party app, which Outlook for MAC does have this conduit. Yes, that is a MS product, but is available.
Sync hotmail with mac
It is unknown when the latest version of Office will be released, if you look at the past, I would say will be coming out this fall for MAC. I've never tried it before but it sounds like a plausible solution. I just had to do the exact same with a Client, took two days on his old connection.
There is no benefit to iCloud if you are already running a platform like Hotmail or Gmail that already offers equivalent functionality plus more without the hassle of changing email addresses. Just use iCloud for all it's other features You don't even need to copy them into a folder. Then it's just a drag and drop from Hotmail to iCloud. The process might take a while, but at least it's effortless. But you wouldn't be able to send email with a From: hotmail email address stamped on it from iCloud's Mail web UI, so you would have to be wanting to switch completely to your me.

If I read an email on my phone I want it to show as read next time I go on my computer. I've held on to my Hotmail account for years now, and the lack of official support for Mail or even Outlook on Macs is pretty much the only thing that annoys me about the service.
POP3 is useless. I know it doesn't answer your question, just some advice, maybe use iCloud for a couple of weeks to see how you like it? It's seriously not a patch on Gmail or even Hotmail. You should probably put a "My experiences are based off the web-based client" disclaimer on this post.
Except Google Apps instead of Use own domain, gmail features and interface, free. Personal preference I guess. All in perfect sync on all devices you have now, and in the future.
Possible cause: Your account credentials or Exchange server name are incorrect.
Gmail supports practically everything. I concur. Squirrel Mail was perfect back in the day when it had all the features of other web based email plus it was all yours and you could manipulate it to do whatever you want.
